What to do with a random animal.

• Drawing prompt. Draw whatever comes up, or draw two and combine them into one creature.
• Charades and Pictionary. Draw five, keep the list hidden and act them out.
• Animal of the day. One draw each morning for a classroom, a family chat or your own curiosity.
• Guess the group. Read the name aloud and have everyone guess whether it is a mammal, bird, fish, reptile or insect before revealing the answer.
• Writing prompt. Make the animal the hero, the villain or the narrator of a short story.

Where the list comes from

Real animals with real articles.

The list is Wikipedia’s vital articles list for animals, a set of animal topics editors consider essential for the encyclopedia. We left out general entries such as “Mammal” and the scientific names of families and orders, so draws land on animals you can picture: a species, a well-known group such as owls or sharks, a breed, or a famous individual such as Laika or Hachikō. The list was last refreshed on October 6, 2026.

Pictures, descriptions and view counts come from the WikiCollector card for each article, which is built from English Wikipedia and updated with each month of pageview data. The rarity badge shows how widely the article was read: Legendary animals are the ones millions of people look up.
